If you’re lucky enough to live in New York you can always check out Humpday, opening there today before rolling out. This movie by Lynn Shelton takes the whole ‘bromance’ genre to a whole new, daring level – kind of like a cross between I Love You Man and Zack and Miri Make a Porno with a little Arthouse sprinkled on top.
This ‘bromance’ thing in movies is turning into a real cultural talking point and spinning off into a genre all of its own. I blame Judd Apatow. In fact, his favorite leading man, Seth Rogan, who starred in Zack and Miri, also used to be a writer on Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G show – small world.
Judd Apatow would never be brave enough to explore male sexuality, rivalry and bonding like they do in Humpday – two straight best buddies make a porno together – but it does make you wonder where the genre can go from here.
So far, Humpday has got a higher rating than Bruno on Rotten Tomatoes and a lot of reviewers are pointing out the timing of being released on the same day as that film and also looking at attitudes to homosexuality, but from the opposite end of the spectrum.
