It seems the Philippines has become a centre of gay movie making without any warning – when did this happen?
Two movies out this year explore very different stages in gay life. The first, Boy, is about a young gay poet coming to terms with his developing sexuality. This sensitive youngster visits a gay bar, has the hots for one of the go-go dancers, then sells his comics and action figures to pay for a night of traded passion.
If this storyline sounds like silly porno-fantasy and, frankly, kind of icky, it seems sensitively handled and a lot less sensationalist than it would have been as an English language movie. The director specialises in controversial gay fare, having directed another movie called Ang pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros – no, my fingers didn’t just slip on the keyboard!
The second movie – and second Youtube trailer here – is called Little Boy, Big Boy. It’s about a gay couple adopting, but without subtitles it’s kind of difficult to work out what’s going on. What do you think the couple is arguing about? I reckon one of them used the other’s butt-plug without asking.
