Like some pink giraffe in the corner of the room, I’ve been avoiding talking about the Sex and the City 2 trailer.

My aversion to it started when Sarah Jessica Parker promised “more of a romp” this time around. What this means is that they’ll be erasing any remaining fragments of the TV show (ie. the smart, sassy, funny, brilliantly observed, honest and bitter-sweet bits) and expanding the ‘hilarious’ girls-on-vacation sequence (ie. Charlotte pokipsee’s her pants) – no, no, NO!

The other problem with the movie versions of Sex and the City is that by applying a light, fairytale coating to everything the filmmakers are losing what essentially made SATC so great on TV (along with the wit, glamour and dirty talk): those relationship cracks that we all fall through. Carrie screwing up another relationship is interesting; Carrie getting married is not. Weddings just don’t make for engaging movies – they’re boring enough in real life.

Really the problem comes down to the differences between TV and cinema: when Sex and the City came in weekly episodes, there could never be a fairytale ending, because you always needed battle scars for the next series – even the final episode kept it real, by comparison. In the movie spin-offs, however, all the stories needs to be wrapped up in a lovely bow by the end of the 120 minutes.

So, will I be buying my popcorn and booking my seat come 28 May? Of course I will – just don’t expect me for Sex and the City 3.
