Future gay movie, Howl, might have been lighting up from all the flash-bulbs at last month’s Sundance Film Festival – it helps a lot having James Franco as your star – but another, very understated, gay movie was quietly winning awards and praise.

Undertow (Contracorriente) is a new gay movie from Peru about a young, married fisherman, and father-to-be, having to face up to the consequences of a secret gay affair with a handsome, local painter, who’s been cold-shouldered by their close-knit community for being open about his sexuality.

Not wanting to give the plot away, there’s a lot more quirkiness and intrigue to this story than it sounds, and the events that unfold for the love-torn fisherman are anything but conventional – you’ll just have to watch it.

Undertow won the World Cinema audience award at Sundance and has already been picked up for North American distribution by gay film specialist, Wolfe Releasing – so another gay movie to look out for in 2010.
