Few teenagers would have the self confidence, maturity, balls and money to write, produce, direct and star in a semi-autobiographical movie, but then most teenagers aren’t gay, Canadian whiz kid and former child actor, Xavier Dolan.
You might wonder “what’s a nice boy like you making a film called I Killed My Mother” upon seeing pictures of the rather sweet and sexy actor/director – at least he didn’t title his movie ‘I Killed My Father To Sleep With My Mother‘…
Actually, he doesn’t kill his mother in the movie, and no one dies. This isn’t a slasher film, but a movie about a turbulent, love-hate relationship between a misunderstood 17- year-old (played in art-imitating-life style by Xavier) coming to terms with being gay and his short-fused, miscomprehending mother – so basically a teen angst movie with a gay twist.
I Killed My Mother has been lauded by the French (winning three gongs at the Cannes Film Festival) and Xavier – now at the ripe old age of 20 – is already in post production on his second movie, Heartbreaker, which also has a gay theme in a story about two friends (a guy and a girl) falling in love with the same boy – could this one be based on Xavier’s life too?
There’s loads of video clips of Xavier talking on Youtube, including the one I’ve embedded where he talks about getting gay bashed at school (something which makes it into the movie) and admits that his mother has yet to see the movie!
I Killed My Mother is on release in English-speaking Canada right now and will be showing at gay film festivals around the world.
Xavier is currently single, but is apparently very picky and unbearable to be with (in his words).
And one final thing: does Xavier, in this clip, remind you of another hot, young actor with a raved-about movie doing the rounds? That’s right, you’ve been found out James Franco; we know that’s you disguised behind a silly wig and a pair of glasses.
