The ‘80s keeps on a-coming back. It looks like the homophobic Police Academy franchise is joining Ghostbusters, Nightmare On Elm Street and all the rest in getting a shot in the arm.

I have to say that while Ghostbusters stirs up a lot of well-deserved nostalgia and might be fun to bring back, the Police Academy movies were always shit and 99.9% of cinema goers were relieved when the terminal movie series flat-lined in 1994.

The first couple of Police Academy movies also have a lot to answer for in their portrayal of gay men. I remember watching them on TV growing up and the predatory, leather-clad homosexuals of the Blue Oyster bar with their own theme music and a predeliction for cops – it put my ‘coming out’ back several years.

No word on whether Steve Guttenberg (who wisely quite after three sequels) will be returning, but the rest of the cast will be filled out with new recruits.
