Gay director Gus Van Sant is very difficult to pin down. In fact, he’s probably best known now for his megaphone duties on Oscar-winning gay movie, Milk, and it’s easy to forget what an interesting filmmaking career he’s had.

You can really break Van Sant’s movie career into 3 distinct periods: his hip days (Drugstore Cowboy; My Own Private Idaho; To Die For), then his mainstream Hollywood years (Good Will Hunting; the seemed-a-good-idea-at-the-time Psycho shot-for-shot remake and Finding Forester), then finally his recent Art-house pics (i.e. nobody went to see them).

Gay movie Milk gave him back some cred, albeit more establishment this time, and was certainly his most commercial movie in a while, keeping the studios happy.

It seems to have impressed Twilight studio, Summit, who have short-listed potential directors for the Nth installment in their juggernaut, Vampire movie franchise down to just three and Van Sant’s name is one of them, so the gay movie helmer might be getting his hands on Taylor Lautner and Rob Pattinson – as if the films weren’t gay enough already!

If GVS gets the gig, he’ll most likely be shooting Part 1 of Twilight: Breaking Dawn (the book being split into two parts for the movie version), while the trailer for Summer sequel, Twilight: Eclipse, is now online – see, this is why sequels should have numbers; makes it so much easier to keep track.
