Hollywood actor Colin Farrell demonstrates the right way to go about lending your name and some celeb kudos to an anti-homophobic bullying campaign – Daniel Radcliffe take note.

I don’t want to bash Daniel, because his heart was in the right place when he filmed a public service vid for gay youth charity, The Trevor Project, earlier this year. But he obviously hadn’t thought things through, because when the media spotlight picked up on his involvement and – mainstream media being dumb as it is – questioned the star’s own sexuality, he completely negated any good he’d done by bleating “I’m not gay! I’m not gay!”

Colin, on the other hand, is coming from a very personal point of view in lending his support to Irish gay youth organisation, BeLonGTo, because his older brother was bashed as a youngster at school for just being gay.

In a sensitive, heartfelt and intelligent statement Farrell recalls times when his brother would come home from school with a bloodied shirt. He couldn’t understand why his wonderful brother, whom he looked up to, was being victimised.

BeLonGTo’s STAND UP! campaign launched last night in Dublin.

I disagree with what you said about Daniel Radcliffe. Why do you have to be gay or have a gay family member to support gay rights? I’m not a lesbian and I really can’t put up with homophobes. Radcliffe happens to have gay friends and I don’t understand why you had to bash him for supporting a good cause.

I applaud Colin Ferrell. I’m very impressed with him and his compassion and moving comments about his and his brother’s experience.

However, I also applaud Radcliffe. I saw the interviews he conducted to announce his involvement with The Trevor Project and at no time did he “bleat” anything. Let alone, “I’m not gay!”

There was no exclamation point behind his statement.

As a lesbian, I welcome any efforts by my straight allies to stamp out homophobia.

Kudos, gentlemen, and boo on you for slamming Radcliffe.
