What gives? I Love You Phillip Morris has apparently been pulled back, yet again, from a U.S. release. This gay movie starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, which has already become a modest hit internationally ($8 million dollars and counting), will likely now never see the inside of a movie theater in the States.

After opening in the UK last month, I Love You Phillip Morris was all set to bow in the U.S. on 30 April, but indie distributor, Consolidated Pictures Group, has now pulled the plug without giving a reason. It’s highly unusual for a pic with big stars to have its opening postponed indefinitely so close to the release date – presumably money had already been spent on prints and advertising. CPG released a trailer for the U.S. market some time ago.

Without an official statement, we can only speculate why the movie has hit a wall again. Carrey suggested earlier this year that its original release date was moved back because Disney didn’t want him playing gay in one film and appearing in their A Christmas Carol movie at the same time.

It’s frustrating for gay movie fans in the States, especially when there are so few high profile films with a homo flavour. Plus, having seen the film, I know it’s a great 2 hours of entertainment. No, it’s not perfect, but it’s fresh, funny and has one of Carrey’s most likeable performances.

The ball is now in CPG’s court and we’ll have to wait and see if a new release date for I Love You Phillip Morris ever materialises. I suspect that anyone interested in seeing the movie in North America will have to wait for the DVD. Big shame.

You can always check out Carrey’s website, though, which is quite cool.
