Are the Wachowskis gunning for the U.S. Military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy with their latest project? Last I heard they were developing a movie version of cult novel Cloud Atlas with German director Tom Tykwer, but now Deadline.com is reporting that the next project for the Matrix brains is a gay, war-set love story between a U.S soldier and an Iraqi.

If this sounds surprising, it’s worth remembering that their first movie, Bound, was a heist story with a lesbian twist. Plus, if their latest script sounds a tough pitch to financiers, this is the pair who managed to sell the idea of Keanu Reeves playing a human being.

This rumoured, new project is set partly in the near future, according to Deadline, and spans back in time to include the current Iraq War, the two lovers presumably on opposing sides. Their relationship is described as “Hard R,” so not just a handshake then.

With all the recent movies tackling US military operations in Iraq not exactly setting the Box Office alight, it might seem a strange move to add the extra hurdle of a gay love story when it comes to promoting it to mainstream audiences, but then nothing is ever as straightforward as it sounds with the Wachowskis and whatever they get involved with is always worth watching.

Even so, I would file this news story under ‘unlikely to ever happen’.
