Above you can watch a short film produced by the UK’s Chartered Institute for IT. It’s about the techno achievements of mega-brained scientist Alan Turing, the man credited with inventing Artificial Intelligence and who played a major role in cracking the Nazi’s Enigma encryption machine during World War Two.

Great, you might think, but what’s it doing on a gay film site? Well, Turing happened to be gay at a time when actively being so risked prison and in 1952 he made the mistake of taking home a 19-year-old male who turned out to be bent in both senses of the word and later helped an accomplice break in to Turing’s house.

Maybe Turing thought his top secret work for the British Government and military intelligence would bring him immunity from prosecution because he reported the break-in to police and then admitted to a sexual relationship with the young man, which resulted in both of them getting charged with gross indecency.

Turing was offered the choice of prison or – I’m kidding you not – chemical castration. He opted for the later and was forced to undergo female hormone injections in the belief it would remove any sexual urges.

Two years later Turing committed suicide and was discovered by his maid next to a half eaten apple that was coated in cyanide, a reenactment from a scene in Snow White, one of his favourite films.

Finally, in 2009 Alan Turing received an official pardon and apology from the UK Government for his “appalling” treatment and his contribution to science and technology can now be fully appreciated without the shabbiness of his conviction casting a dark shadow over it.
