Most sub-genres in art or entertainment are invented on the spot by journalists in order to sound smart and well-informed. Thus there is so much crap talked about and meaningless labels thrown around when actually most of us judge something on whether we liked it or not.
Music has always been the biggest culprit and in recent years we’ve had ‘wonky pop,’ ‘grime,’ electro-clash,’ and ‘chiptunes’ – actually ‘chip music’ can stay, because that at least makes sense as a genre.
Now movies are catching up and Quiet Earth has credited upcoming indie film Spork as starting a ‘bitpunk’ wave. Spork is the story of an intersexed junior high school pupil who identifies as female, gets all kinds of grief from her classmates and relies on her brother/guardian for relationship advice. She decides to perform in an upcoming dance talent show, believing this will make her popular at school.
Quiet Earth singles out the movie’s mix of retro kitsch, gender issues and dorkiness (think Napoleon Dynamite) as evidence of a new sub-genre.
Hopefully Spork gets a distribution deal and we can make up our own minds. For now you can watch a short video with the movie’s gay writer/director, J.B. Ghuman, Jr, discussing the genesis of the story. Be warned though: it may increase your heart rate.
