Before Brendan Fraser was a star and long before he wasn’t, he made a film called The Twilight of the Golds. It’s a ‘what if’ scenario in which pre-natal testing for a child’s likely sexuality is now possible and a deeply conservative young couple find out that their unborn son is likely to be a big homo – will they go ahead with the birth knowing this or will their prejudices force them to consider an abortion? Fraser plays the expectant mother’s gay brother.
This might seem far fetched, but it seems some wacko scientists think they might have found a ‘gay cure’ for unborn babies. The science part is a bit hard to follow, but to sum up: a pre-natal steroid drug known as ‘dex’ is currently being tested on female foetuses which have a condition called CAH. This condition leads to ambiguous genitalia in girls because of the presence of male hormones, making them appear less female.
Some Dr. Frankenstein types have put two and two together and seem to think that if a drug can remove these male hormones at the foetus stage, then surely it can ‘cure’ lesbian foetuses and make them straight, because of course all they are is girls with extra testosterone. What a load of crap, from the type of minds who used to think drilling holes in your head helped stop migraines. I don’t think we have to worry about a Twilight of the Golds scenario – yet.
