Following up its recent list of gay movies you should definitely see, gay Aussie site SameSame has just published a list of gay movies you should (not) see for very different reasons.
Their list of ‘gay movie nasties’ is a rundown of the 10 most offensive or just cringe-worthy scenes/films with a gay flavour or subject matter. There’s some obvious inclusions (I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and Lesbian Vampire Killers) and some surprising ones (Teen Wolf), but I think they’re kind of harsh including To Wong Foo – yes it’s the movie equivalent of being beaten about the head by a pink, fluffy cushion for 2 hours, but Patrick Swayze is great in it.
While you might find it reassuring that few of these ‘gay movie nasties’ are recent releases, 2010 isn’t shaping up to be the most enlightened when it comes to gay rep on cinema screens: in the last few weeks alone we’ve had the homophobic ‘comedy’ of McGruber (characters called ‘Bender’) and Death at a Funeral (Ewwww, Papa liked it in the ass!), not to mention the medieval crap dropping from the mouth of a certain A-Team movie cast member. Nasty indeed.
