As Hollywood marketing departments will tell you, it’s always a tricky thing when a movie without gay characters has to feature two men on its poster. Studios spend billions of dollars in research and market testing in order to ensure that their new Vin Diesel action film doesn’t look too homo in its advertising.

Of course low-budget, indie movies don’t have such luxuries and new film Queen Of The Lot (its title already gay question mark) falls into this trap. Looking at the two men in the bottom left of the movie poster you’re likely to think: in the background; close together; similar haircut and facing the same direction = gay couple. (They’re actually brothers)…

…December movie release, The Fighter, shows how you put just two guys on the poster and maintain their hetero credentials. We know these two aren’t lusting after each other because of their casual posture, the boxing gloves, Christian Bale’s bored expression and the fact that they’re looking in completely different directions, Mark Wahlberg clearly distracted by someone waving a chew toy in the distance…

…The Eagle’s poster just about gets away without too much gay subtext because only Channing Tatum has a spear erection, although from Channing’s expression I do wonder where Jamie Bell’s keeping his…

…And as for Yogi Bear, I’m getting all sorts of mixed messages.

Every so often I receive a curiosity in the post, some obscure movie to watch and review. Sometimes these should come with a health warning while others have surely committed a crime along the way. Score is the first 70s-era sexploitation movie I’ve been sent and it’s actually a lot of fun.

The plot – as you expect with these things – is as thin as a pink negligee: a bored, American husband and wife living in some eurotrash coastal resort pass the time by playing a Dangerous Liaisons style game whereby they bet on each other’s chance of bagging some hot, young coupe or alluring pin-up.

The latest target for these married swingers is sexy-but-stiff former convent girl, Betsy. Spidery wife Elvira – wonderfully scheming and competitive – has got just one more night to seduce her. At stake is her pride and licence to sleep with Betsy’s handsome, young husband who is also lusted after by Elvira’s own spouse, photographer Jack.

What follows are two sexually charged games of cat-and-mouse as the young couple drop round for dinner and get a lot more than they bargained for…

It’s a smart film with some great lines – especially from Elvira – and much wittier than it needs to be. Despite it’s obvious, dated charm it’s still an erotic trip too (especially with the restored hardcore scenes). As it says on the box, “watch it with someone you want to excite”.

There’s a trailer here, but it’s a bit naughty and pretty much crams the whole story into 3-and-a-half minutes.

Intense, serious-faced and impeccably tailored fashion designer Tom Ford might not be the obvious person to write and direct a frothy rom-com, but he promises a few chuckles in his sophomore movie after the intense, serious and impeccably tailored A Single Man with Oscar-nom’d Colin Firth.

[A Single Man] was catharsis,” Ford told fashion mag Vogue. “That was my homo-angst movie. Now I’m shooting another. I’m writing the script – a comedy. I’m in the mood to have fun and smile.”

Sounds like Ford is now happy for A Single Man to be labelled ‘a gay movie’ then.

He promises his next film won’t be based on a novel or existing work, so a sharply comic look at the fashion biz from a gay designer’s perspective perhaps? Seems unlikely after The Devil Wears Prada.

Whatever Mr. Ford comes up with, I think we can expect more American Beauty than American Pie.

Set pics from I Was A Teenage Werebear

These pics are from the set of a short horror film spoof called ‘I Was A Teenage Werebear’. It will eventually form one quarter of anthology movie Chillerama.

This segment is directed by gay filmmaker (and judge on VH1′s Scream Queens), Tim Sullivan. His horror movies always have a high stud quota, but this is apparently his first to go all-out gay.

From the second pic it looks like we can expect a little Scream homage; and, no, that’s not Brent Corrigan in the chair, although it does so look like him.

Other films in the anthology include Wadzilla, where a trip to the clinic results in a giant, killer sperm for one reproductively challenged guy, and The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein.
